Artist's Comments

Been rereading Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast books, which are perhaps the greatest piece of literature ever written imo, and have been inspired to start drawing some images from it. Have wanted to for ages, but have been intimidated for some reason, likely because I've such an admiration for the story, and don't want to do it and the characters less than justice.

Favorites come first- Steerpike, whose "career" began as an apprentice in the kitchens. One of the most delightfully wicked characters ever concocted.

(I should reread those sometime.) I think it's a great picture of Steerpike, his attitude comes across perfectly.

Wonderful.

Capitalism and religion kill the animals, individuals and society. They can kill you in a variety of ways, slow or quick. There can be no happiness or peace on this planet, no prosperity for the masses, as long as this slavery continues.

Thanks for the comment! Steerpike is perhaps my favorite of literary characters. I'm not sure if he's a healthy hero to have, but, much love for him anyway. XD

Thanks! And thanks for the fave =)

I know exactly what you mean with the intimidation of drawing certain characters and getting them right (or not, as the case may be). I'm in awe of anyone who can draw a good Steerpike, as I just can't seem to get him to emerge properly on paper. I've got the same problem with Doctor Prunesquallor - wouldn't you know it, the two characters I most get asked to draw? :)

This rocks heartily, by the way. Your style is incredibly rich, and I love the way he really seems to be a part of the darkness, both visually and psycollogically(?).

Thanks much for the comment =). Feedback from another fan is of course very meaningful, it seems too few are familiar with Gormenghast.

I've been finding Gertrude to be a challenge, she just doesn't want to manifest properly. Somehow, the notion of drawing all the inhabitants of Gormenghast seems a good one, although it's bound to take years. XD
:icondarkjimbo:
Oh yes, Gertrude was the other one that's been through version after version, and none of them have been quite right. Can't wait to see her if you do manage to get her down, though.

And yes, I fully expect this to take me a long time, particularly as I want to move each one from sketch to fully-coloured portrait. :)

Oh wow... I wish I could get him to turn out so well! I think he's the only character where I have a perfect mental image that I just can't get on paper. This captures his personality so well! :faint:

I agree with you about the books, it's the most amazing piece of reader deception in the history of literature as far as I can tell, it's under-appreciated.

:+favlove: (I've used this more times in your gallery today than anywhere else on this site in a year!)

it's been like 6 or 7 years since I read that book, and that was only because I was writing it.

Thanks very much for the comment! Sorry I've taken ages to respond, been swamped lately.

Steerpike's one of my very favorite characters, and I'm pleased that you approve of the rendition =) He was intimidating to approach, since I wanted to do him justice. When I'm able to fit them in, I'd like to move along to the rest of the denizens of Gormenghast, as they're all eminently draw-able. XD
